This type of Cicada is know as a Dogday Harvestfly. It is usually only seen during the Dog Days of summer and usually feeds on pine trees or pine roots. Unlike the "7-year" cicadas, this species hatches every year in the same area and the nymphs mature in only 3 years. They are quite loud.  This particular bug was rescued from my pool on one of the hottest days of the summer.  7/21/2004
